Poetry and Rap as a tool for Early Years

Our Future City is delivering a pilot early years’ music programme across Brighton & Hove until February 2019 offering new, holistic and sustainable early years music to benefit children under 5 who are most in need in Brighton & Hove.

The Early Years programme includes network and workforce development, high-quality, targeted musical activity and embedded research & evaluation practices. The programme is being designed and delivered by SoundCity partners, Children Centres and OFC partners, including arts, health and education professionals.

Poetry and Rap as a tool for Early Years - Led by Jon Clarke

Date: Thu 7 Feb

Time: 6.00-8.00pm

Venue: The Basement, 24 Kensington Street, Brighton, BN1 4AJ

Tickets: Free but booking essential via Eventbrite page

This session will take ideas and sounds that are natural to a person and make them into music. Every kid knows what they like. Every kid knows how to make sound effects. Using a combination of rhyme writing and live looping we will put those things together to make a memorable piece. The aim is to find quick, natural, catchy ways to engage children and teach them music and literacy while covering any subject they would like to explore.

Jon Clark is an active lyricist/producer who teaches music to people of all ages and backgrounds. His teaching work has taken him to the playbus, primary and secondary schools, homeless shelters, pupil referral units and arts festivals. He also raps and produces for Sombras, a bi-lingual hiphop outfit. He is in the process of finishing an online rhyming dictionary which he uses to illustrate the science of writing lyrics.

Early Years Programme - What’s on offer

The pilot activities are exploring new settings for early years music making, and new musical repertoire, tools and techniques. As part of this work, we are able to offer monthly professional development and networking sessions for Early Years Practitioners across the city from June 2018 to February 2019.

The offer is open to anyone working in early years music from Brighton & Hove and the surrounding area and the sessions are suitable for early career practitioners as well as the very experienced. Please do share this opportunity with others you think may be interested.
